The Benefits of Buying Wine by the Bundle

There are a few reasons we sell wine by the bundle at Burgdirect. For one, it doesn’t make much sense economically to ship bottles by themselves. For another, we’re drawing from winemakers’ limited reserves, and often there aren't enough bottles available to fill an entire case. And when it comes to shipping, it makes sense to spread the costs across a greater number of bottles.

But while these are all good reasons, they don’t really get to the heart of it. The real reason we structured our business this way is that curated bundles are a fantastic way to get into Burgundy wine, emphasizing the qualities that make wine such a wonderful thing to drink, store, and collect.

1. Expertly curated discovery and exploration

Most Burgundy wine lovers fondly recall their ‘aha’ bottle, the one that started them on their path into Burgundy.

The wonderful variety that Burgundy has to offer reflects an incredible amount of potential ‘aha’ moments. From the north to south, from the hillsides to the valleys, from the limestone to the clay, there is so much to explore in Burgundy that none of it can be captured in a single bottle.

Truth be told, it can’t be captured in three or six bottles either. But when wines come in bundles, every discovery brings with it a chance at exploration. Rather than tasting bottles in isolation, you can take a few steps into the Burgundy landscape, discover what sort of wines you like most, and try new wines that you might not normally get for yourself on their own.

2. A more compelling and enjoyable tasting experience

Much of what makes wine fun is comparing and contrasting new bottles against the compendium you’re slowly building in your head. Above and beyond the sheer delight of a delicious wine, much of the journey is about building out your palate, your knowledge, and your appreciation of good wines.

This is something we always keep in mind when putting together our offers. Every bottle is one we’ve personally tasted, and we like to curate these into intentional testing experiences that often have an overarching theme.

For instance, many of our bundles contain different vintages from the same vineyard, vertical tastings that give you a chance to really taste the difference that sunshine and weather can make.

Similarly, our horizontal bundles give you the chance to explore wines across different vineyards, but all grown and bottled in the same year. These give you a chance to sample the impact of individual producer practices, and the varying influences of soil, slope, drainage and elevation on the wine.

Sometimes our bundles revolve around collections of Grand Crus, white wine bundles, red wine bundles, a mix of aged and more recent wines, all representing Burgundy’s near endless variety for you to compare and contrast for fun, interesting, and eminently enjoyable tasting experiences.

3. A more complete picture of what makes Burgundy Burgundy

For such a small geographical area, Burgundy is a region defined by its immense variety. While most of our wines are drawn from the acclaimed Cote D’Or region, we have partners all throughout Burgundy, and we’re always looking for interesting new additions to our offers.

This means that you can find all sorts of different wines in our bundles at a number of different price points, giving you a fuller picture of what makes Burgundy so unique. Wines grown on large vineyards, on small vineyards, and from renowned plots like Vougeot, Pommard, and Gevrey-Chambertin as well as smaller and more obscure producers that punch well above their weight class.

4. Always having wine on hand for special occasions

While we wouldn’t blame you for keeping them to yourself, one of the big benefits of buying by the bundle means you’re always stocked up for special occasions, and have something on hand if you need to procure a great gift in a pinch.

Whether it’s a surprise celebration, an impromptu dinner party, or a last minute present for a fellow wine lover, a few reliably excellent bottles on hand is a great way to prepare yourself for any occasion involving close friends and family.
