Château de Marsannay

Easily the most prominant estate in the northern Côte de Nuits village of Marsannay-la-Côte, the Château de Marsannay produces a wide range of primarily reds that run the gamut from Grand Cru to Village wines, but with a particular focus on over a dozen different plots in Marsannay itself. With all 40 hectares certified organic since 2022, this domaine is very serious about environmental stewardship. To this point, their commitment to CO2 reduction includes the use of horses to plow, and a refusal to burn pruned vine material (a very common practice across Burgundy), instead choosing to grind the shoots to stimulate microbial life and further enrich the soils. As for the wines, the Marsannays generally show moderate density and plenty of available fruit, making them quite attractive with a minimal amount of cellering. Interestingly, Marsannay has never been included in the Premier Cru classification system, but a recent petition to the French government is likely to succeed in creating that distinction, and potentially as many as 12 of this estate's Marsannays will soon be labeled as Premier Cru!
